Like a lot of you, I won’t be having a baby this Christmas, or any time soon. My family is not fostering a child or looking to adopt. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to support those who are faced with an unexpected and unsupported pregnancy. Though circumstances in our family have not led us to foster or adopt children in need; that doesn’t mean I’m unwilling to support those who do. Here are some ideas for how we can put muscle behind our beliefs this Christmas. 1.Consider gifting a pro-life pregnancy center. Send money or find out if they have a wish list. Consider getting your friends together for a “shower,” to collect the needed items. Not only will you have a fabulous reason to spend holiday time with cherished friends, your combined efforts will benefit others and show your support. 2. Gift a family who is fostering. Do you know a family who has opened their home to children? Even twenty-five dollars can help offset the extra gifts they will be buying. Not only that, but it is a way to encourage that family. It would especially be a blessing during the holiday season when routines change and kids sometimes get tired or more emotional than usual. 3. Babysit for a family with a special needs child, so the parents can have a date or go Christmas shopping. Having a child with a mental or physical disability can be exhausting on so many levels. Your support even for an hour or two can offer a welcome break. 4. Make gift bags for the homeless. Those on the streets look for their daily bread each day. Make some bags with a water bottle, granola bars, and even a gift card for a nearby fastfood restaurant where they can warm up for a while. 5. Get a group together to carol at the hospital or a nursing home. Bring holiday cheer and the message of eternal hope to those who need it. 6. Make packages and cards for shut-ins from your church. People who are no longer able to go to church regularly so look forward to news from those they saw each week. These ideas are just the tip of the iceberg. And our charity shouldn’t just last through the Christmas season. But Christmas is a good time to serve others and remember those who are sacrificing for others or are less fortunate. Isn’t that what Jesus did for us? AmberAuthor: Amber Swenson
